Capstone Project
Project Overview
For my capstone project, I conducted extensive research on the intersecting barriers that individuals with learning disabilities face when trying to access higher education. The aim of the project was to understand the various obstacles that these individuals encounter and to develop recommendations for institutions to improve accessibility and inclusivity.
Topic
Understanding the intersecting barriers that people with learning disabilities encounter when trying to access higher education
This topic evolved from my previous work, researching Universal Design for Learning (UDL) in my magazine and prototype. I chose this topic as what emerged from this research is that there is barriers that prevent people with learning disabilities to get to post-secondary in the first place, whereas UDL is for students that are already in university.
Research Synthesis Diagrams
Research
I conducted both qualitative and quantitative research to gather data for the project. I conducted in-depth interviews with individuals with learning disabilities who had attempted to access higher education, as well as educators, administrators, and support staff who work with this population. I also analyzed existing literature, research studies, and policy documents related to disability access in higher education.
Key Findings
Through my research, I identified several key barriers to access and success for individuals with learning disabilities in higher education. These included a lack of awareness and understanding of learning disabilities among faculty and staff, limited access to accommodations and support services, and financial barriers that limit access to the resources needed to succeed in higher education. This research was done to complete the Research Synthesis Diagrams.
Exhibition
The exhibition for presenting these findings occurred in 2022 at Mount Royal University. The exhibit was left up for 3 days to allow people on campus to view the findings that could not attend the exhibition.
Impact
The project had a significant impact on the academic community and served as a catalyst for increased discussion and action around accessibility and inclusivity in higher education. My recommendations were implemented by several institutions, and my research was cited in policy documents and academic articles related to disability access in higher education. Overall, the project was a success, and I am proud to have contributed research and awareness to a more inclusive and equitable higher education system for all individuals.
